"This DVD teaches one 'how to
fish', rather than 'catching the fish' for
somebody, and Richard Nongard is a great teacher. This DVD showed me
very practical ways of relaxing and will continually be a great
resource, reminder, and replenishing."
-- E. Ban, Chicago, IL

Affirmations are sometimes called "self-talk" and are instructions to yourself.
The most effective affirmations are created by you. There are many sources of suggested affirmations but each affirmation needs to be tuned to your individual needs. They should always be in the current tense and be as direct as possible. Personal self-talk should be realistic -- "I am wonderful and everyone sees me that way" is, first of all, probably not realistic and secondly will not be taken seriously by you or your brain. So, target affirmations according to your goals. If this week is your week to work on letting go of the past, a good affirmation may be "I exist in this moment. The past is past." or "The past is not worthy of my attention. I make each day rich and rewarding."
Affirmations should not be majestic or wide but should reflect the small steps your are working on at the moment. Affirmations that are too broad, like goals that are too broad, cannot be performed in one step. Wishing to be a millioniare by the age of 40 will not work but putting together the small steps that work toward making you a millioniare by 40, such as saving 10% of your pay check, will work.
Like anything else, practice makes perfect. As you create your goals and affirmations that align with those goals, you will discover which types of affirmations work best for you. The most important part is to start. As Nike says, "Just do it!!!"
Will power is non-existent and doesn't work. Self-talk is real and it does work. Instead of telling yourself "Oh, gosh. I shouldn't", tell yourself "I don't want it. I don't need it. I walk away from it." This is the key to self-discipline and doing the things you want yourself to do is a major key to self esteem.
Start your day even before you get out of bed. Exercise a few of your affirmations. They can be said out loud, to yourself or while under self hypnosis. Repeating your affirmations while under self hypnosis is the most effective, but repeating them before your start your day is the critical part. Try it for a few days. You will be surprised at how much better your day goes and how much better your feel in general.
